Most of my work is made from porcelain, a dense white clay that becomes glass like after firing. I often combine thrown pieces with some hand built techniques to achieve many of my functional forms and sculpture.
A variety of surface applications are used to add design; texture and color. ‘Slip’ which in my case is a wet version of the porcelain I use, is often enhanced with colorants and painted or ‘trailed’ onto the pottery. Sgrafitto, which is a ‘scratching’ technique is one of my main ways of decorating as well.
I tend to do as much coloring and texturing as I can while the pots or sculptures are in a semi-wet or ‘leather hard’ stage. After the pottery has had time to dry it is slow bisque fired, then fired again to maturity with food safe glazes. Each piece is hand made, decorated and glazed with care by me.
